On 19 October 1850, Annie Smith Peck, an American mountaineer, was born in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1908, accompanied by the guides R. Taugwalder and G. Zumtaugwald, she reached the north summit of Huascarán (6,768 m) in Peru, in the Cordillera Blanca: this was the first ascent of the peak. She also climbed the Matterhorn in the Alps in 1895 and Coropuna in Peru in 1911.
